“It is the viewer who makes the paintings” Marcel Duchamp
Visual Conversations plays with the exhibition catalogue as a documentation format that appears before the exhibition. It contains visual descriptions of artworks, where the viewers have to imagine the exhibition in a mental way. What happens with our expectations when the mental image doesn’t correspond with the original?
A concept and an idea for an exhibition catalogue with the purpose to remove the fast expression – in this case the image that represent the artwork.
Today, in our visual society, we often already have experience the exhibition on social media before we see it for ourselves. Instagram has become an exhibition catalogue of its own, a documentation of our individual experiences.
The descriptions are audio files of art description for blind that I have listened to and transcribed to text and visually interpreted. I removed the artist name to make it more difficult to identify the artwork, which also make the own imagination more important. It’s different classic artworks from various museums around the world collected in one coherent exhibition. All the artworks can be traced with an # on Instagram but also with their coordinates.
